Geminids Meteor Shower 2022

The Geminids meteor shower is the most dependable astronomical event of the year and it peaks this week on December 13th and 14th!

Meteor showers occur when earth passes through debris from comets or asteroids traveling around the sun. These fields of particles burn up in the atmosphere and create bright streaks of light, trailing through the skies. Visibility is affected by the amount of light emitted from the moon but if you plan…you can probably see at least a few of these spectacular events. The NYT Space and Astronomy Calendar is a great way to track and prepare for upcoming meteor showers.

Optimal viewing relies on getting as far away from artificial light sources as possible. Here a few more tips to maximize your Geminids experience!

  • Find a secluded spot away from city lights and get comfortable.
  • Dress appropriately for the weather.
  • Give your eyes time to adjust to the dark and resist the urge to look at your phone screen during this time. Typically 30 minutes will do the trick.
  • Lay down and be prepared to gaze at the sky for a while.
For more tips, see if your town has an astronomy society or is near a designated dark sky area. No special equipment is needed to view the Geminids, so happy hunting and always explore safely!
